Steven Brown

Dance is a form of patterned body movement, usually done in synchrony with a musical beat. Recent brain imaging studies have shed light on both the motor and perceptual aspects of dance. Interestingly, the use of body gesture to convey semantic meanings in dance draws strong connections with not only music, but also language.

Steven Brown is a cognitive neuroscientist working in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University. He got his Ph.D. in the department of Genetics at Columbia University, and did postdoctoral research at the Pasteur Institute, the Karolinska Institute, the University of Texas Health Science Center, and Simon Fraser University.  His research deals with the neural basis of human communication processes, with a focus on the arts.  He is co-editor of two books: “The Origins of Music” (MIT Press) and “Music and Manipulation” (Berghahn Books).
