In his book “The Stuff of Thought”, Steven Pinker tells the story of how the “F-bomb” became the subject of quite some debate following the 2003 live broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards. In the heat of the moment, lead singer Bono exclaimed, "This is really, really, F-ing brilliant" before millions of viewers, some of whom were undoubtedly offended. In this lecture, I will explore how taboo words come to be offensive and why we curse from a psychological perspective.
